15 New Testament Concepts That Christians Ignore

Have you ever noticed that Christians love some verses and quote them often, yet some of these other verses are rarely, if ever mentioned or obeyed?

When I started out writing about a month ago, I naively thought there would be about five items. I put the blog post on the back burner and over the course of about a month, I realized ten more. I would be willing to be there are more and that this is a just a partial list.

#1 Don’t Get Married!

Here’s a bit of advice from the New Testament writer Paul, who had previously been a murderer who killed believers. He clearly states it’s best to remain unmarried, like he is.

In 1 Corinthians 7:8, Paul clearly says, “Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: it is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am.”

Later, in 1 Corinthians 7:28, he states,

“But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned.”

You’ve be hard pressed to find a Protestant church giving this advice from the pulpit or teaching children this in Sunday School.

In fact, in many Christian sects, people are encouraged not just to marry but to also have many children.

#2 The Only Reason To Marry Is To Alleviate Sexual Passion That You Cannot Control

Once again, from the writer Paul, the only reason to get married is because the couple cannot contain their burning (sexual) passion.

The King James version of 1 Corinthians 7:9 states “But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.”

The Living Bible’s version states  “But if you can’t control yourselves, go ahead and marry. It is better to marry than to burn with lust.”

Once again, it’s highly unlikely to hear this message being preached. It’s ridiculous and everyone knows it.

To demonstrate the ridiculousness of it, I’ll present a pre-marriage counseling scenario.

Counselor: Thank you both for coming in today for premarital counseling. It will be just one session – a short session. Just a couple of questions to you both and we can all be on our way. I’m sure you have lots to do between now and the wedding day so let’s get on with it.

(to male) Young man, just two questions.. First share with me please. Are burning with sexual passion for this young woman?

Man: Yes, I definitely am. It’s hard to contain myself.

Counselor: Ah ok good! Thank you! Perfect! You also just answered the second question!

(to female) And young lady, I must ask you the same question. Are you burning with sexual passion for this man?

Female: Oh yes! I definitely am burning with passion – a lot of passion!

Counselor: Okay, thanks for your honesty. Now just another question. Please answer carefully. Can you control yourself?

Female: Well, it’s so hard! No, I don’t think so!

(Counselor claps hands in glee)

Counselor:
Okay, this is wonderful! I am happy to say you are both fully qualified to marry! I’m sure you’ll enjoy a long and happy life together. Thanks for coming in! This meeting is dismissed and I will see you on Saturday at the wedding!

Male: I can’t wait that long. Can we move the wedding to today?

#3 Jesus Claimed That He Was Not “Good”

This comes from a story in Matthew 19:16-17

“And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?”

And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

These particular verses are quoted at times, followed by mental gymnastics to try to make it mean like Jesus really meant something else. Believers will tell you that, despite what you’re reading, of course Jesus did not say that he was not good. Of course Jesus is good.

Let’s break it down into a real life comparable scenario.

If I say “Why do you call me a baker? Only my spouse is a baker”. Am I telling you that I am not a baker? Yes, I sure am!

Just like Jesus is essentially saying, “I am not good”.

It could not be more clear. If you want to be in the truth, do not spin it.

#4 To Gain Eternal Life You Must Keep The Commandments

#5 & To Be Perfect, Sell Your Possessions & Give Them To The Poor

From the same story as above, we have Jesus telling the same man that in order to inherit eternal life, he must keep the commandments and give up all his possessions.

Even though these are the actual words of Jesus, this idea just doesn’t fly in the evangelical circles. It’s ignored.

It’s replaced with narratives that Jesus never said – “Invite Jesus Into Your Heart” and “Make Jesus the lord of your life”. Again, these are narratives and never appear in scripture. They have “better” answers than Jesus did.

Matthew 19:16-22 tells the story.

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Clearly, Jesus told him that in order to inherit eternal life, to keep the commandments.

Clearly, Jesus expanded on that and told the man he could also be perfect! The man did not seem to like that answer. Maybe he just wanted eternal life and did not want to be perfect. I think that’s likely why Christians ignore it as well. They do not wish to be perfect.

In any case, what preachers are preaching the actual words of Jesus where he talks about how to be perfect? They are not repeating what Jesus said here.

It might be a good reminder here that the Bible describes Job from the old testament as ‘perfect’. Job 1:1 cannot be denied either, if you want to be honest.

“There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.”

They’re teaching that you are worm-like, lowly, sinful, disgraceful, deserving of hell.

#6, 7, 8 Adam Was Not Deceived, Women Should Shut Up
& Women Need To Bear Children

1 Timothy 2:11-15

Once again, we have Paul, the former Roman murderer turned Christian, writing about about women and men.

Verses 11 and 12 read.

Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.” To reiterate the point, subjection is the the act of bringing someone under the control of another. The woman diminishes herself to the man.

He continues “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

Clearly Paul, the misogynist, thinks men should control women and women should just shut p and listen and learn. It’s as though a man could never learn from a woman, isn’t it?

And later in the chapter,

“For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.”

So now we learn from the misogynist that Adam was not even at fault in the story of the garden of Eden? Blame the woman! Well if that’s true, why did this god of the Bible execute a harsh punishment toward Adam for his part, separate than that of Eve’s punishment?

Continuing…

“Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.”

Now the misogynist who says it’s best not to marry is saying that women need to have babies to be saved. Saved from what exactly?

#9 Jesus Prayed That Believers Have An Equal Relationship & The Same Oneness That He Had With The Father

Jesus final prayer, from John 17, is pretty much ignored, or twisted. While the modern day Christian narrative, again, is that believers are worm-like, lowly, full of sin and deserving of hell, this prayer of Jesus contradicts that. Incidentally, the idea of perfection in believers is mentioned again here in his prayer.

Here it is.

“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

You can’t be “worm-like, lowly, full of sin and deserving of hell” and be on the same status level with Jesus. It’s a problem. It’s a contradiction.

So it’s best to simply ignore this verse.

#10 Jesus Told The Apostles That They Would Do Greater Works Than He Did

What? Greater than Jesus?

John 14:12 states

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

This verse is a problem for two reasons. If Jesus is god and the disciples and the rest of us are worm-like, lowly, full of sin and deserving of hell, how can believers do greater works than he did? The other problem is that this is a prophesy of Jesus that never happened or certainly was not written about in the Bible.

#11 The Kingdom Of God Is Within You

From Luke 17: 20-21

And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:

Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

You mean it’s not outside of us humans? It’s within us? Us? We don’t have to do anything? It’s already in us?

#12 Go Ahead – Drink The Poison!

The scripture form Mark 16:18 says,  “They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

These are the words of Jesus, after his resurrection, telling the remaining 11 apostles that they can pick up snakes and drink the poison and not be harmed. Naturally, some Bible-believers take up the challenge which is reminiscent of the tide pod challenge from 2017.

Actually, we can cut the tide pod challengers some slack since was likely invented and mostly executed by those who did not yet have fully formed brains. They were teens. On the other hand, this poison drinking / snake handling challenge, came directly from the one and only all powerful, all knowing god.

It was practiced early on in Christianity and seems to have started up in the early 1900’s in the Appalachian region of the USA and continues today. Although the practice is illegal, it’s done in secret gatherings. If a person dies while drinking the poison or handling the snakes, it’s said that it was just their time, or it’s a sign that the victim has insufficient faith. That makes sense.

Here is a video from a snake handling church.

#13 Jesus says, “Hate Your Parents, Children, Siblings”

Wait, I thought Jesus was all about loving everyone. That is the narrative but Nope! Love your neighbor, but hate your parents, children and brothers and sisters. This is the true message of Jesus.

I wonder what would happen if your mother and father became our neighbor? Hmmm. Wondering if you could continue loving your parents if you move beside them. Is this a loophole?

The startling and rarely-mentioned verse comes from Luke 14:26 and reads “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”

Obviously this is a cult-like command, ignored in mainstream Christianity but smaller, lesser known denominations certainly adhere to it with full Biblical support.

#14 Jesus Came Only For The Lost Sheep Of Israel

The New Testament story, from Matthew 15:22-28, is where Jesus himself declares this very sentiment. Jesus is being bothered by a Canaanite woman who is desperate for him to help her daughter who is possessed. She cries out to him but he ignores her. The apostles complain to Jesus about her incessant whining about her sick daughter and they want him to her sent away. Jesus then says to them, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

If you thought Jesus came for all, and yes, is at lease verse to support that, this verse is a direct contradiction to that.

#15 Jesus Makes A Racial Slur, Comparing A Woman To A Dog

Okay, if you never knew that Jesus demonstrated blatant racism, I’ve got news for you.

In the same story as outlined above where Jesus is annoyed by this woman who is crying for help, he simply tells her why he won’t help her. He has no inclination to help the Canaanite. The exact words “It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.”

Luckily for her, she acknowledges her reduced ethnic status, and says that even dogs get the dropped crumbs from the table, he then changes his mind and helps her.
